ALEJANDRO
AMENABAR
-LUNA-
Born in Santiago de Chile in 1972. Like most of today's movie directors,
Amenábar started his career when he got hold of a video camera.
His first video short was THE HEAD (1992) - a thriller with an over
the top, gory ending where the protagonist rips a guys head off and
the head bounces around the floor.A couple of years later, while he
was studying information sciences at Madrid University, one of his
short movies came to the attention of Spanish film director Jose Luis
Cuerda. He produced.THESIS, a huge box-office success in Spain, and
won seven Goya awards ,as well as picking up prizes at a number of
international festivals. Shooting a successful follow-up to such an
impressive debut was a tall order, but Amenábar pulled it off
in style with the nightmarish OPEN YOUR EYES, which debuted to even
greater critical acclaim and surpassed the grosses of Thesis. In 2001
he shoot THE OTHERS, a super production with an international success.

ALEX
DE LA IGLESIA -MIRINDAS
ASESINAS- Before
becoming a director, de la Iglesia earned a degree in philosophy from
the University of Deusto. He supported himself after graduation by
drawing comics and working as a fanzine editor. De La Iglesia made
his feature film debut with Accion Mutante (1993), a hectic, comedic
view of an anarchic future populated by cyborgs and a mutant terrorist
organization, which gained him considerable critical acclaim. It was
produced by Pedro Almodóvar. His sophomore film, El Dia de
la Bestia (Day of the Beast) nearly granted him his wish for it became
the highest-grossing internationally released film from Spain. Unfortunately,
it also won de la Iglesia a slew of awards as did his previous film.
His third film, Perdita Durango (1997), starred American actress Rosie
Perez and Spanish sensation Javier Bardem. An interesting companion
piece to David Lynch's Wild at Heart (1990), Perdita Durango was written
by de la Iglesia and Barry Gifford (author of Wild at Heart and co-screenwriter
of the film adaptation) and expanded on the adventures of the character
originally portrayed by Isabella Rossellini in Lynch's film. |

CARLOS
SAURA
-LA TARDE DEL
DOMINGO- Ranked
among Europe's elite filmmakers, Carlos Saura had his greatest impact
in the late '60s and early '70s when his often politically charged
films revitalized Spanish cinema. Like his mentor Luis Buñuel,
Saura freely blends reality with the macabre and an often grotesque
surrealism to create worlds in which reality is subjective. Saura's
most powerful films came during the last years of Franco's regime;
After making pictures for more than 40 years, he has retained a trademark
of highly unorthodox but unfailing routine: he begins at the beginning
and shoots chronologically. "I write the end at the start, but
then, when I get to it, I always change it according to how I feel." |

TRUEBA
-El LEON ENAMORADO-
Spanish director of light, folcloric comedies
with classical characters and story structures. Trueba had directed
features and penned screenplays for a number years, starting with
"Opera Prima/First Effort" (1980) unbeknownst to Americans
save film festival attendees. This changed with the release of "Belle
Epoque" (1993) which snagged a 1993 Oscar nomination for Best
Foreign Film. A story of a young soldier who stays with a painter
and his four beautiful daughters, the film illustrated Trueba's
desire to entertain through well-scripted comedies. His signature
films include "El Año de las Luces/The Year of Awakening"
(1986) and "The Mad Monkey" (1989), his English-language
debut, starring Jeff Goldblum. According to Trueba, his influences
include such diverse auteurs as Billy Wilder, Jean Renoir and Woody
Allen. |
